Personally, the pattern memorization and small windows of opportunity made for an experience that was immensely satisfying when done right. As a result, not everyone is going to enjoy Huntdown’s major selling point, especially when the normal difficulty still feels quite hard. Without question one poor choice or an attempt to get a little extra damage in can derail the whole thing, and most of the bosses can take a while to beat. Usually, a boss battle will require some element of timing, dodging, and patience, as players learn the attack patterns of their opponent. Where Huntdown really shines, though, is in its boss battles. Heed the warning: Do Not Sleep on Huntdown. But behind its acid comic style and vulgar tone lies a superb, meticulously created action experience, packing in addictive and creative carnage, at breakneck pace, for an agreeable price. It can become overwhelming and the game is no pushover even on the normal difficulty, but carefully choosing when to fight and when to be more cautious makes for satisfying encounters. Huntdown is a nihilistic, loud, explosive, even obnoxious arcade shooter. And eventually things get very frantic, as players try to dodge advancing attacker and bullet fire whiling simultaneously the herd of enemies in front of them. The game carefully peppers new enemies throughout each of the 5 levels so that nothing ever feels too repetitive. That precedent was set way back in Predator 1, and Naru’s plan echoes what Dutch does in that movie, which is in this movie's future. So much of what makes Huntdown exciting is that players don’t know what to expect next.
#HUNTDOWN IGN HOW TO#
So just like in other installments of the Predator franchise, the victorious hunter has to figure out how the alien tech works and how to find ways to defeat it. She eventually drives it into the swamp, which slows it down long enough for Naru to set up the killing blow, using the bone helm to redirect the alien’s targeted projectile bolts so they wind up inside his own forehead. She then steals the Predator’s helm, which is different from the helmets we’ve seen Predators wear in the past but it does aid in aiming his ranged projectiles.Īs the alien chases her down (the moon-roof wasn’t enough), Naru attacks from above, further wounding it.
#HUNTDOWN IGN INSTALL#
This allows Naru to use a special pistol (more on this pistol below) to install a moon-roof in the back of the alien’s head. Hand painted 16-bit pixel art graphics and hand-drawn animations. Hunt solo or give suppressive fire and advance on the enemy together in co-op as you run, jump, and take cover in the neon soaked, graffiti strewn 80s inspired cityscapes. Which is exactly what happens.Īfter briefly escaping, Naru preps for the final confrontation, eating a bunch of the flowers while also using a trapper as bait to lure the Predator. Lay waste to the criminal underworld and make a killing in this hard boiled action comedy arcade shooter. Taabe holds his own for a while but you know these Predator fights are all fun and games until somebody gets impaled. The final fight starts as Naru and her brother Taabe (Dakota Beavers) both engage the Predator. She’s also the one who eventually figures out how to beat the Predator, and it involves a breed of orange flower that when consumed can drop a person’s body temperature enough to avoid detection by the Predator’s heat vision.

As our hero, she’s the one who starts to figure out that there’s something out there in the forest that could very well be hunting her tribe. Our main character is Naru (played by Amber Midthunder), a Comanche warrior and hunter whose family seems to think she should leave the hunting to the guys.
#HUNTDOWN IGN FULL#
Like we mentioned in our full Prey review, the film takes Predator back to its roots. It’s the year 1719 in the Northern Great Plains, and a Predator is dropped off here on Earth to find and hunt the planet’s apex predator – you know, pretty standard Predator-style stuff.Īnd in fact, the basic story in Prey is also pretty standard Predator-style stuff, in a good way – a fierce human warrior uses their wits and their environment to hunt down and kill a deadly alien warrior whose sole purpose for being there is to hunt and kill.
